Key Facts
Who Were the Bali Nine?
Imagine a group of nine friends from Australia who decided to do something very risky. They were caught in Indonesia trying to take a lot of a special powder called heroin. This powder is very dangerous and illegal. The police found them, and it led to a lot of problems for everyone involved. It's a story about making bad choices and facing serious consequences.
A Big Surprise for the Police!
In April 2005, the police in Indonesia found something shocking. They discovered 8.3 kilograms of heroin, which is like carrying a small bag of sugar, but this was worth a lot of money, about 4 million Australian dollars! That's enough money to buy many, many toys or video games. The group was trying to send it all the way back to Australia.
What Happened Next?
Because they were caught with so much illegal stuff, the courts in Indonesia gave them very strict punishments. Two of the group, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, were given the most serious punishment: the death penalty. Sadly, they were executed in 2015.
Others got very long prison sentences, like spending many years behind bars. One person, Renae Lawrence, was let out of prison early after serving some of her time.
