Key Facts
Meet the Awesome Eagle!
Imagine a super-smart bird with a big, yellow, hooked beak and amazing eyesight! That's the bald eagle. Even though they have a white head, they aren't actually bald!
The name comes from an old word meaning 'white-headed'. These birds are mostly brown with a striking white head and tail, and the girls are a little bigger than the boys. They love to hang out near big lakes and rivers where there are lots of fish to eat.
Eagle Homes: The Biggest Nests Ever!
Bald eagles build the biggest nests of any bird in North America. These nests are so huge, they can be as deep as a small swimming pool and as wide as a car! They use sticks and twigs, and sometimes even old branches, to build them.
They often build these giant homes in tall, old trees. It takes them a long time to build them, and they often use the same nest year after year, adding more sticks each time.
Super Snatchers: What's for Dinner?
Bald eagles are super hunters! Their favorite food is fish, and they are amazing at catching them. They'll fly over the water and then dive down, using their sharp talons (that's like their claws) to grab a fish right out of the water!
They are also opportunistic, meaning they'll eat other things if they find them, like small animals or even dead animals they find. They have to eat a lot to keep their energy up for flying!
A Symbol of Freedom!
Did you know the bald eagle is the national bird of the United States? It's a symbol of freedom and strength. For a while, there weren't many bald eagles left, which made people sad. But thanks to people protecting them and stopping the use of harmful bug sprays, the bald eagles are coming back! Now, they are doing much better, and we can see them soaring in the sky again.
