What's This Big Word Mean?

Appeasement is like trying to calm down someone who is being very pushy or aggressive by giving them what they want. Instead of fighting, people try to make them happy by giving them things, like toys or snacks. In the past, countries sometimes did this with other countries to try and stop a big argument or a fight from starting.

It's like saying, 'Okay, you can have that one thing, just please don't start a big problem!'

When Did This Happen?

This idea of appeasement was used a lot between 1935 and 1939. The leaders of Britain and France were worried about a country called Germany, which was led by a man named Hitler. They thought if they gave Hitler some of what he wanted, he would stop being so aggressive. They hoped this would prevent another big war, like the one that had happened before and was very scary for everyone.

Why Did They Do It?

The grown-ups who remembered the last big war were very scared of another one. It was like remembering a really bad storm and not wanting another one to come. Also, some people thought that the rules after the last war were too hard on Germany.

So, they thought giving Germany a little bit of what it wanted might be better than having another terrible war. It was a tricky decision, like choosing between two not-so-great options.

Did It Work?

Sadly, giving in to the aggressive country didn't stop the big fight. Germany kept wanting more and more, and eventually, a huge war did start. The leaders who tried appeasement thought they had saved peace, but it turned out they had just made the problem bigger. It's a lesson that sometimes being too nice to someone who is being mean can make things worse.
