Key Facts
Where the World Touches the Sky!
The Altai Mountains are like a giant puzzle piece where four countries – Russia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan – all meet! It’s a super high place, with the tallest peak, called Belukha, reaching almost as high as 10 Eiffel Towers stacked up! These mountains are so big, they stretch for a long, long way, like a giant bumpy road across the land.
Home to Snow Leopards and Eagles!
Even though it looks tough, lots of animals call the Altai Mountains home. You might find shy snow leopards, big eagles soaring high above, and fuzzy marmots peeking out from their burrows. The weather can be cold, especially at the top where snow stays all year, but lower down, it's a bit warmer, perfect for plants to grow and animals to roam.
People Who Love the Mountains!
Not many people live here because it's so high and wild, but the ones who do are very special. They are often from groups like the Altais or Kazakhs and have lived here for a very long time. They are great at taking care of animals like cows, sheep, and horses, and they know all the best places to find food and build their homes.
Rivers That Start Here!
Guess what? Some of the biggest rivers in the world start their journey right in the Altai Mountains! Rivers like the Irtysh and Ob begin as tiny streams high up and then grow into mighty rivers that flow for thousands of miles. These rivers are super important for the people and animals living far away from the mountains.
