Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Kingdom of Alodia!
Alodia was a super old kingdom, like a really, really old castle, that existed a long, long time ago in Africa, in a place called Sudan. It was so big and important that people called it by different names, like Alwa! Its capital city, Soba, was right where two big rivers, the Blue Nile and the White Nile, meet. Think of it like a special meeting spot for two giant water slides!
When Did Alodia Rule the World?
Alodia started after another ancient kingdom called Kush faded away, around 350 AD. It became a Christian kingdom in 580 AD, which was pretty late compared to its neighbors. For a long time, from about 800 to 1100 AD, Alodia was like the biggest and strongest kid on the playground!
It was even bigger and more powerful than the kingdom to its north, called Makuria. They were like best friends with close family ties.
Soba: A City Like No Other!
The capital city, Soba, was described as a place with huge houses and churches that sparkled with gold! It also had amazing gardens. Soba was a busy trading hub, like a giant marketplace where people brought all sorts of cool things. Goods came from far away, like India and even China! People in Alodia were smart and could read and write in their own language and in Greek.
Why Did Alodia Disappear?
Around 1100 AD, things started to change. Alodia began to get smaller and less powerful. Maybe there were fights from people coming from the south, or maybe there wasn't enough rain for the gardens. A super bad sickness called the plague might have also made people sick. By the year 1500, Soba was destroyed, and the kingdom of Alodia sadly came to an end.
