Key Facts
Who Gets to Be the Boss?
Imagine your country needs a leader, like a president! In 2024, the people of Moldova got to choose theirs. They voted on October 20th, and if no one got enough votes, they had another vote on November 3rd. It's like a big popularity contest, but for running a whole country! The person who wins gets to be the leader for a few years.
Two Big Choices!
The main choice was between the current president, Maia Sandu, and a former prosecutor named Alexandr Stoianoglo. Maia Sandu wanted Moldova to be closer to Europe, like making friends with countries such as France and Germany. Alexandr Stoianoglo was seen as being friendlier towards Russia. It was a big decision for Moldova's future!
Voting for Friends and the Future!
On the same day as the first vote, people also voted on whether Moldova should officially want to join the European Union, which is a big group of European countries. Maia Sandu really wanted people to vote 'yes' for this. It’s like wanting to join a super club with lots of benefits!
Why Does This Vote Matter?
This election was super important because it helped decide which direction Moldova would go. Would it look more towards Europe and its neighbors, or towards Russia? The winner would guide the country's decisions on friendships, business, and how it lives its life. It’s like deciding if your town will have a new playground or a new library!
