2013 New York City mayoral election

In 2013, the people of New York City got to choose their new mayor! The mayor is like the captain of a giant ship, making sure everything runs smoothly. It's a super important job! This election was special because the old mayor, Michael Bloomberg, had been the boss for a long, long time and couldn't be the boss anymore. So, it was time for someone new to take the wheel!

There were two main people running to be the mayor. One was Bill de Blasio, who was already a big helper in the city as the Public Advocate. The other was Joe Lhota, who used to be in charge of all the trains and buses! People listened to what they promised to do for the city and then they voted. It was like picking your favorite superhero to lead the team!

Drumroll please! Bill de Blasio won the election! He got a LOT of votes, more than 73 out of every 100 people who voted chose him. That's like almost everyone on a big playground picking you for their team! He became the first Democrat to be mayor in many, many years. It was a big change for New York City!

When Bill de Blasio became mayor, it meant a new chapter for New York City. He promised to help families and make the city even better. Choosing a mayor is a really big deal because they help decide things like schools, parks, and making sure everyone is safe. It shows how important it is for everyone to have a say in who leads them!
