The Big Race Across America!

In 1972, people all over the United States were deciding who should be their leader, the President! It was like a super important school election, but for the whole country. Two main teams, or 'tickets,' were running.

One was led by President Richard Nixon, who was already the boss. The other was led by Senator George McGovern. Everyone who was 18 or older could vote, and it was the first time younger people could vote in a presidential election!

Two Big Choices for President

President Nixon wanted to stay in charge for another four years. He talked about how well the country was doing and his trips to other countries. Senator McGovern had different ideas.

He wanted to stop a big war called the Vietnam War right away and help people who didn't have much money. It was like choosing between a plan that said 'things are good' and a plan that said 'let's make big changes!'

A Landslide Victory!

When all the votes were counted, it was a HUGE win for President Nixon! He won so many states, it was like winning almost every game at the playground. He got more votes than almost any other Republican president ever! Senator McGovern didn't win as many votes, but he still got a lot of people to support his ideas for change. It was a very clear choice for most voters.

Did You Know? Fun Election Facts!

Wow! President Nixon won so many states that he even won in places in the South that usually voted for the other team. This election was also special because it was the first time people who were 18, 19, and 20 years old could vote in a presidential election. They got to help choose the country's leader for the very first time!
