What Is Small Whale? A Free Online Encyclopedia Built for Kids
If you've landed here, you're probably wondering what Small Whale is and whether it's worth your time. Fair enough. Let us tell you the story.
The short version
Small Whale is a free online encyclopedia built specifically for kids. It has over 50,000 topics covering science, history, animals, space, geography, and pretty much anything else a curious kid might want to know about. Every article is written in age-appropriate language, so the content actually makes sense to young readers instead of reading like a textbook.
How it started
Small Whale started in October 2025 as a school mid-term break project. I'm Antti, and my son Benjamin and I wanted to build something cool together. The original idea was to create an educational app, but it quickly turned into something much bigger: a full-blown encyclopedia for kids.
What started as a one-week project became a passion that we're still building today. We've gone from a handful of articles to over 50,000 topics, and we're adding more all the time.
You can read more about our story on the About page.
What makes Small Whale different
There are other encyclopedias out there, so why did we build another one? A few reasons:
Age-appropriate content
Wikipedia is amazing, but try reading an article on quantum physics or the Roman Empire with a 7-year-old. The language is too complex, the sentences are too long, and the content assumes too much background knowledge. Small Whale takes the same topics and explains them in a way that actually works for kids.
Massive topic coverage
With over 50,000 topics, we cover a huge range of subjects. From animals and nature to space and astronomy, from history and culture to science and technology. If your child is curious about it, there's a good chance we have an article on it.
Built by real people, not a corporation
Small Whale isn't backed by a big tech company or a publishing house. It's built by a father and son who care about making learning accessible and fun. That means we can focus on what matters (quality content for kids) without worrying about shareholders or ad revenue.
Completely free
No subscriptions. No paywalls. No premium tiers. Every article on Small Whale is free to read. We believe that educational content should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their family's financial situation.
What topics does Small Whale cover?
We organize our content into 20 main categories:
- Geography (continents, countries, cities, landmarks)
- History and Culture (civilizations, historical figures, traditions)
- Animals and Nature (animal groups, habitats, endangered species)
- Science and Technology (physics, chemistry, biology, computers)
- Space and Astronomy (solar system, planets, galaxies)
- Human Body (organs, senses, health, nutrition)
- Environment and Earth (weather, climate, natural disasters)
- Sports and Games (team sports, Olympics, athletes)
- Art and Creativity (drawing, music, stories, film)
- And many more, including mathematics, food and cooking, transportation, holidays, and philosophy
Who is Small Whale for?
Small Whale is for any curious kid, but it works especially well for:
- Kids who love learning and want a safe place to explore topics on their own
- Homeschooling families looking for a reliable, free reference resource
- Parents who want educational screen time that's actually educational
- Teachers looking for kid-friendly content to supplement their lessons
What's next for Small Whale
We're not done. We're constantly adding new topics, improving existing articles, and making the platform better. This is a long-term project for us. We plan to keep building Small Whale for years to come.
If you haven't tried it yet, head to the homepage and search for something your child is curious about. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
