Key Facts
Meet the Ocean's Biggest Star!
The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth! It's even bigger than the dinosaurs! These gentle giants swim in all the world's oceans, from the chilly Arctic to the warm tropics. They have long, streamlined bodies that are a beautiful blue-gray color, with a lighter underside. Their tails are huge, helping them glide through the water like a super-powered submarine.
What's on the Menu for a Giant?
Even though blue whales are enormous, they eat tiny, tiny creatures called krill. Krill are small, shrimp-like animals that float in the ocean. A blue whale can eat millions of krill in just one day!
They do this by opening their giant mouths wide and taking in huge gulps of water filled with krill. Then, they push the water out through special bristly plates in their mouths, called baleen, trapping the krill inside to swallow.
A Whale of a Home!
Blue whales love to travel and can be found in oceans all around the globe. They often swim in cooler waters to find lots of krill to eat, and then move to warmer waters to have their babies. Think of them as world travelers, always looking for the best buffet! They are usually seen alone or with just one other whale, enjoying their own space in the vast ocean.
Blue Whale Superpowers!
Blue whales have incredible superpowers! Their hearts are as big as a small car and beat very slowly, only a few times a minute. They can also hold their breath for a long time, up to 30 minutes, while they dive deep into the ocean.
Sadly, blue whales are in danger because of things like pollution and being hunted in the past. We need to protect them so these magnificent creatures can keep swimming in our oceans.
