Key Facts
A Surprise on a Special Day!
One day, a very important Jewish holiday called Yom Kippur arrived. It's a day for thinking and being quiet. But on this special day in 1973, surprise attacks happened!
Countries called Egypt and Syria attacked Israel. Most of the fighting was in places called the Sinai Peninsula and Golan Heights. These were places Israel had gotten in a war a few years before.
It was a big surprise because it was a holiday!
Who Was Fighting?
The main fighters were Israel on one side, and Egypt and Syria on the other. But two super big countries, the United States and the Soviet Union, helped their friends a lot! The US sent supplies to Israel, and the Soviet Union sent supplies to Egypt and Syria. It was like a big game of tag, but with real tanks and planes, and the whole world was watching!
The Fighting and the Stop!
Egypt and Syria's armies crossed into places they weren't supposed to be. Egypt crossed a big river called the Suez Canal, and Syria went into the Golan Heights. Israel fought back hard!
After lots of fighting, a special group called the United Nations helped everyone agree to stop fighting. They made two stops, but the fighting started again a little bit before it finally ended on October 25, 1973.
Why It Matters Today!
Even though Israel won the fights, everyone learned something important. The countries that attacked felt better because they did well at first. Israel knew that winning wasn't always easy. This war helped people start talking about peace, and eventually, Israel and Egypt made a peace agreement. It showed that even after fighting, friends can be made!
