Yo-Yo Ma

Imagine a musician who can make a big, beautiful instrument called a cello sing! That's Yo-Yo Ma. He was born a long, long time ago in 1955.

Even when he was a little kid, like maybe your age or a bit older, he was super good at playing the cello. He started learning from his dad when he was only four years old! That's younger than most kids start school.

He moved to America and went to amazing music schools.

Yo-Yo Ma's parents were from China, but he was born in a city called Paris, which is in France. When he was seven, his family moved to America, first to Boston and then to New York City. He studied music at a very famous school called the Juilliard School.

Think of it like the best music playground ever! He also went to a big university called Harvard, where he learned all sorts of interesting things.

Yo-Yo Ma doesn't just play one kind of music. He plays classical music, which is like the fancy music you might hear in a concert hall. But he also plays fun music from all over the world!

He plays folk music, which is music people have sung for a long, long time. He even plays music from China and South America. He has played with lots of different musicians, like singers and guitar players, making music that's exciting and new.

The cello Yo-Yo Ma plays is very, very special. It's called the Davidov cello, and it was made a super long time ago, in 1712! That's older than your grandparents, and even older than your great-grandparents!

It was made by a famous instrument maker named Antonio Stradivari, who made some of the best instruments in the world. Playing such an old and beautiful instrument helps Yo-Yo Ma make his music sound extra magical.
