The World Bank Group's origins trace back to the pivotal Bretton Woods Conference in July 1944. Convened amidst the final throes of World War II, its initial mandate was to finance the reconstruction of war-torn nations, particularly in Europe. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the first of the World Bank's institutions, was established with this critical objective.

However, as post-war recovery progressed, the Bank's focus gradually shifted. The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) promotes foreign direct investment into developing countries by providing political risk insurance (guarantees) and credit enhancement. Finally, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) offers international facilities for conciliation and arbitration of investment disputes.

Together, these five institutions leverage diverse financial instruments and expertise to support a wide spectrum of development activities.
