Who Was This Leader?

Imagine a very important person in Australia's story, like a captain of a big ship! William McMahon was like that for Australia. He was the 20th Prime Minister, which means he was the top leader of the country for a year. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1908, and he loved his country very much. He worked hard to help Australia make good decisions.

His Big Job Adventure!

William McMahon had a super long career helping Australia. He was in charge of different important jobs for 20 years straight! That's longer than you've been in school! Before becoming Prime Minister, he was a lawyer, which means he knew a lot about rules. He also served in the army, helping protect his country. He even went back to university to learn even more!

A Year at the Top!

In 1971, William McMahon became the Prime Minister. He was 63 years old when he started, making him the oldest person to become Prime Minister without being a temporary leader. During his time, Australia was still figuring out what to do with soldiers in a faraway place called Vietnam. He helped make plans for them to come home safely.

Did He Win the Big Game?

After his year as Prime Minister, there was a big election, like a big game to see who would lead next. Sadly, William McMahon's team didn't win that time. Another leader named Gough Whitlam took over. But even though he didn't win that election, William McMahon was known for being a very clever and determined person who never gave up!
