Key Facts
Meet President Taft, The Big Guy!
William Howard Taft was the 27th president of the United States, serving from 1909 to 1913. He was also the 10th Chief Justice of the United States, which is like being the head judge of the country's highest court. He is the only person ever to do both jobs!
Taft was born a long time ago, in 1857, in a city called Cincinnati, Ohio. His dad was important too, working for the president as an Attorney General and Secretary of War.
Taft's Big Adventures!
Before becoming president, Taft had many exciting jobs. He became a lawyer and even a judge when he was still quite young! Later, President McKinley sent him to a faraway place called the Philippines to be its governor.
Then, President Theodore Roosevelt made Taft his Secretary of War, which is like being in charge of the country's army and navy. Roosevelt thought Taft would be a great president, so he helped him win the election.
Being President Was a Big Job!
As president, Taft thought a lot about countries far away, especially in Asia. He also made sure to help countries in Latin America when they needed it. He tried to make trade rules fairer, but sometimes it was tricky because some people wanted special deals.
Taft and President Roosevelt sometimes disagreed on big ideas, like how to protect nature or if big companies were being too powerful. This made their friendship a little bumpy!
From President to Top Judge!
After being president, Taft went back to teaching at Yale University. But he still wanted to be a judge! In 1921, President Harding made his dream come true, and Taft became the Chief Justice. He worked hard as a judge until he wasn't feeling well. He died in 1930 and was buried in a special cemetery for heroes, the first president to be buried there!
