Where Did This Big Thinker Come From?

William H. Seward was born a long, long time ago, in 1801! He grew up in New York, where his dad was a farmer. William became a lawyer, which meant he was really good at understanding rules and laws. He loved learning and helping people. He even became the governor of New York, which is like being the boss of the whole state! He was a very important person who helped shape America.

Fighting for Fairness!

When William Seward was around, some people were treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. He believed everyone deserved to be treated with kindness and respect. He signed laws that helped Black people have more rights and even made sure they got a fair trial if they were accused of something.

He was a brave voice for those who didn't have one, standing up against unfairness even when it was hard.

The Big Alaska Deal!

Did you know America bought a huge, icy place called Alaska? It was William Seward's big idea! In 1867, he made a deal to buy Alaska from another country. Some people thought it was a silly idea at first, calling it 'Seward's Folly.' But Alaska turned out to be full of amazing things like gold and oil! It was a super smart deal that made America much bigger.

A Helper During Tough Times

America had a very difficult time called the Civil War. William Seward was the Secretary of State, which is like being a top advisor to the President. He worked hard to keep other countries from interfering in America's problems. He was also almost hurt by someone who wanted to harm leaders. Even after that scary event, he kept working to help the country heal and grow.
