Water Pollution

Imagine your favorite juice box getting a little bit of dirt in it. That's kind of what water pollution is! It's when bad things, like trash, chemicals, or even tiny germs, get into rivers, lakes, and oceans.

This makes the water unsafe for fish to swim in and for us to drink. Sometimes, pollution comes from big factories, and other times it's from little things like plastic wrappers dropped on the ground that get washed away by rain.

People have been making messes in water for a very, very long time. Even in ancient times, when cities grew, they sometimes dumped their waste right into rivers. But as more people lived together and made more stuff, the pollution got much worse.

Think about all the cars, factories, and farms we have today! All of these can add yucky things to our water if we're not careful. It's like a never-ending game of cleaning up!
