Key Facts
Meet the Water Buffalo!
Water buffalo are super strong animals that look a bit like cows but are much bigger and wilder. They have long, curved horns that can be as wide as a car! These amazing animals love to cool off by rolling in mud and water, which helps them stay clean and protected from bugs. They are found in lots of countries in Asia and Africa.
What's for Lunch?
Water buffalo are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! Their favorite foods are grasses, reeds, and other leafy plants that grow near water. They spend a lot of their day munching on these yummy greens. They have special teeth that are perfect for grinding up tough plants. Sometimes, they even eat water plants while they are swimming!
Big and Strong!
These animals are HUGE! A grown-up water buffalo can weigh as much as a small car, or about 10 grown-ups! Their horns can be really wide, sometimes as wide as a playground slide. They use their strength to push through thick mud and even to protect themselves from big cats like tigers. They are definitely not animals to mess with!
Friends with People!
Did you know that people have been friends with water buffalo for a very, very long time? In many places, water buffalo help farmers by pulling plows in the fields, especially in wet, muddy rice paddies. They are strong and gentle helpers. Baby water buffalo, called calves, are super cute and stay close to their moms for protection.
