Meet the Washoe!

Imagine a group of people who have called a special place home for thousands of years! These are the Washoe people. They live in a beautiful area near a giant, sparkling lake called Lake Tahoe.

This lake sits right on the border between two states, California and Nevada. Many Washoe people are part of a group called the Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California today. They have their own special language that is different from any other language in the world!

Where Did They Live?

The Washoe people lived in a land with mountains and a big, beautiful lake. Think of a lake so big it looks like a giant blue mirror! This is Lake Tahoe.

The Washoe people were amazing at living in this place. They knew all the best spots for finding food and building their homes. They used the trees and plants around them to make everything they needed.

Their homes were cozy and kept them safe from the weather.

What Did They Do?

The Washoe people were super smart about using what nature gave them. They were great hunters and gathered yummy berries, nuts, and roots from the land. They also knew how to fish in Lake Tahoe.

They made beautiful baskets that were so strong and useful, they could even hold water! These baskets were made from plants that grew nearby. They were also very good at telling stories and singing songs to share their history.
