Wars of the Roses
Key Facts
Who Were the Rose Warriors?
Long, long ago, England had a big problem. Two powerful families, the Lancasters and the Yorks, both thought they should be the king! They were like two teams in a super serious game of tag, but instead of tagging, they fought battles. The Lancasters used a red rose, and the Yorks used a white rose. That's why people call it the Wars of the Roses!
A Royal Tug-of-War!
This wasn't just one quick fight. It was a series of battles that lasted for about 30 years, on and off. Kings would win, then lose, then win again! It was like a royal tug-of-war, with the crown of England being pulled back and forth. Imagine a game of musical chairs where the music kept stopping and starting for a very, very long time!
Why All the Fuss About Roses?
The roses weren't just pretty flowers. They were symbols, like a team's mascot! The red rose was for the House of Lancaster, and the white rose was for the House of York. These families were related to the king, and they both believed their family deserved the throne. It was a fight for the most important job in the whole country!
A New King for England!
After all the fighting, a new king named Henry Tudor came along. He was related to the Lancasters, and he married a woman from the York family. This helped bring the two sides together. He became King Henry VII, and his reign started a new, more peaceful time for England. He even put a red and white rose together on his flag to show everyone was friends again!
