Imagine a man who loved words so much he wanted to sing about everything he saw! That was Walt Whitman. He was born a long, long time ago, on May 31, 1819, on a place called Long Island in New York.
He didn't go to school for very long because he started working when he was just 11 years old. He tried many jobs, like writing for newspapers and even teaching! But his biggest dream was to write poems that felt like a big, exciting song about America.
His Big Book of Poems!
Walt Whitman wrote a very special book of poems called 'Leaves of Grass'. He paid for the first printing himself, which means he used his own money to make it! This book was different from other poems at the time.
Walt wanted to include everyone – farmers, workers, and all kinds of people. Some people thought his poems were a little too bold, but Walt believed in being honest and celebrating life. He kept adding to and changing 'Leaves of Grass' his whole life!
A Helper During Tough Times
During a big fight called the Civil War, Walt Whitman did something amazing. He went to Washington, D.C., and worked in hospitals, taking care of soldiers who were hurt. He saw so much sadness but also so much bravery.
His poems often talked about feeling sad when people were lost, but also about how people could heal and get better. He even wrote famous poems about President Abraham Lincoln after he passed away.
