Who Was This Leader?

Viktor Yanukovych was a big leader in Ukraine, a country in Europe. He was like the captain of a ship, leading the country for a few years. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1950. Before becoming the top leader, he was in charge of a big part of Ukraine called Donetsk Oblast. He was also a member of a group called the Party of Regions, which was like a team with certain ideas.

A Rollercoaster Ride to the Top!

Becoming the leader wasn't a straight path for Viktor Yanukovych. He tried to become president once before, but there were some problems with how the votes were counted. This caused a big fuss, like when everyone in class disagrees about a game! Because of this, they had to have another election, and he didn't win that time. But he tried again later and won, becoming the president in 2010.

When Things Got Tricky

When Viktor Yanukovych was president, he wanted Ukraine to be friends with Europe. But then, he suddenly changed his mind and didn't sign a special agreement with Europe. This made a lot of people very unhappy, and they started protesting in the streets. It was like a huge playground disagreement that got really serious. Sadly, some people got hurt during these protests.

Leaving the Country

Because of the big protests, Viktor Yanukovych had to leave his job as president. He left the country and went to live somewhere else, in Russia. The people in Ukraine decided they needed a new leader. He was accused of some serious things, and a court in Ukraine said he was guilty of treason. He is now remembered as a leader who left his country during a difficult time.
