What's a Euromaidan?

Euromaidan was like a super big, noisy protest that happened in a country called Ukraine. It started because the leader decided not to sign a special agreement to be closer friends with Europe. Instead, he wanted to be closer friends with Russia.

People didn't like this! They gathered in a big square called Maidan Nezalezhnosti, which means Independence Square, in the capital city, Kyiv. It was a way for many people to show they disagreed with their leader and wanted a different path for their country.

The Giant Camp in the Square!

Independence Square turned into a huge camp with thousands of people! They set up tents, kitchens to cook food, and even places to get help if someone got hurt. There were big stages where people gave speeches and talked about what they wanted.

To keep safe, the protesters built tall barricades, like walls made of anything they could find, to protect themselves. It was like a city within a city, all focused on making their voices heard!

Why Did They Protest?

The people protesting were unhappy about many things. They thought their leader and his government were not being honest and were taking too much money for themselves. They also felt that people's rights weren't being respected.

When the police tried to stop the protests very roughly, it made even more people angry and join the protests. It showed that ordinary people wanted their country to be fair and honest.

A Big Change Happened!

Because so many people were protesting, things changed. The leader eventually left the country. The people in charge of the country were replaced, and new leaders were chosen. This whole event was a really big deal for Ukraine and showed how powerful people can be when they come together to ask for what they believe in. It was a moment when people stood up for their country's future.
