Key Facts
Meet Valais: A Swiss Mountain Playground!
Valais is a super special place in Switzerland, like a big, beautiful playground tucked between tall mountains! It's shaped like a long valley, almost as long as a super long train track. This valley is home to two giant mountain families, the Pennine Alps and the Bernese Alps.
Think of them as the biggest, snowiest slides you've ever seen! Valais is also a bilingual place, meaning people speak two languages there: French and German. It's like having two favorite storybooks to read!
Where the Water Flows and the Sun Shines!
Even though Valais has lots of snow on its highest peaks, like Monte Rosa which is super, super tall, parts of it are also very sunny and dry! The middle of the valley gets hardly any rain, which is perfect for growing juicy grapes for yummy wine. But don't forget the mountains!
They get tons of rain and snow, which is like a giant water park for rivers. This water is so important because it helps make electricity, like magic power for lights and toys!
Adventures on the Slopes and Tracks!
Valais is famous for its amazing ski resorts, like Zermatt, where you can see the iconic Matterhorn mountain that looks like a pointy party hat! People love to ski and snowboard down the snowy mountains. But it's not just about snow!
In the summer, you can hike and explore. And guess what? Valais has super-fast trains that zip through the mountains, connecting towns and making it easy to explore.
These trains are like speedy magic carpets!
A Long, Long Time Ago...
Valais has a long history, like a very old fairy tale. It joined Switzerland a long, long time ago, in 1815. Before that, it was a republic guided by a prince-bishop.
Imagine a king who was also a bishop! The people of Valais stayed true to their traditions and didn't change their ways easily. Later, special trains called the Simplon Railway and the Lötschberg Railway were built, making it easier for people to travel to and from this amazing mountain land.
