United States Department of Homeland Security

The United States Department of Homeland Security, or DHS for short, is like a big team of helpers for the whole country. They work to keep everyone safe from bad things, like bad guys trying to cause trouble or even dangerous weather. Think of them as the country's neighborhood watch, but super-powered and working all over the United States!

This amazing team wasn't always around! It officially started on March 1, 2003. It was created because people wanted to make sure the country was extra safe after some very sad events. So, they brought together lots of different safety jobs into one big, powerful group to protect everyone better.

The DHS has more than 240,000 people working for it! That's more people than can fit in a giant stadium! They do all sorts of important jobs, like making sure planes and airports are safe, watching over the borders to make sure only good people come in, and even helping when there's a big storm or other disaster.

These protectors have many different jobs! They help stop bad guys, protect us from dangerous things like bombs, and make sure our country's computers are safe from hackers. They also help people who are moving to the United States and make sure ships are safe on the water. It's a lot of work to keep everyone secure!
