Meet the World's Biggest Meeting Room!

The United Nations General Assembly, or UNGA for short, is like a super important club for almost all the countries on Earth! It's one of the main parts of the United Nations, which is an organization that tries to help countries get along. Think of it as a giant classroom where leaders from 193 countries (that's a LOT!) gather to discuss important stuff.

They meet in a big building in New York City, and it's where they make plans for a better world.

How Do All Those Countries Talk?

Every country that's part of the UNGA gets one vote, no matter how big or small it is. This is super fair! When they need to make a decision, most of the time, they just need more than half of the countries to agree.

But for really big decisions, like about peace or money, they need a lot more countries to say 'yes' – two-thirds of them! It’s like needing way more than half your class to agree on a fun field trip.

Why Does This Big Meeting Matter?

The UNGA is where countries talk about big problems like helping people who don't have enough food or making sure everyone is safe. They can suggest ideas and make recommendations, which are like strong suggestions. Even though these suggestions aren't always like rules that everyone HAS to follow, they are very important because they show what most of the world thinks.

It helps everyone work together to solve problems.

Where Did This Big Meeting Come From?

The very first meeting of the UNGA happened a long, long time ago, in 1946, right after a big war. It was in a place called London, and only 51 countries were there to start. Now, there are way more countries, almost four times as many! It shows how more and more countries wanted to join together to talk about peace and making the world a better place for everyone.
