Thermometer

Imagine a special stick that can tell you if it's super hot outside or if you have a fever. That's a thermometer! It's a tool that measures temperature, which is how hot or cold something is. Some thermometers have a red or blue liquid inside that moves up when it's hot and down when it's cold. It's like a tiny race track for liquid!

A long, long time ago, around 400 years ago, a clever Italian scientist named Galileo Galilei made one of the first tools to measure temperature. It wasn't exactly like the thermometers we use today. It was a glass tube with a bulb at the end, and it used air instead of liquid! It was a big step in understanding how hot or cold things could get.

Thermometers help us in so many ways! Doctors use them to check if you're feeling sick. We use them to see if the oven is hot enough to bake cookies or if the freezer is cold enough to keep ice cream frozen. They even help us know if it's safe to swim in the ocean or if we need a warm coat outside. They're like little helpers for staying safe and comfortable.

Many thermometers have a special liquid, like alcohol or mercury, inside a thin glass tube. When the thermometer gets warmer, the liquid expands, like a balloon filling with air, and it moves up the tube. When it gets colder, the liquid shrinks and moves down. The numbers on the side of the tube tell us exactly how hot or cold it is!
