Key Facts
Meet the Band That Was Too Cool!
The Velvet Underground was a rock band that started way back in 1964 in New York City. They were super unique because they mixed loud rock music with artsy, experimental sounds. Think of it like mixing your favorite cartoon with a really cool science experiment! Even though they didn't sell tons of records when they were around, lots of other bands later copied their awesome style.
Where Did Their Name Come From?
The band didn't always have the name The Velvet Underground. They tried out a few names before landing on that one in 1965. They got it from a book about people who liked different kinds of things.
The main people in the band were Lou Reed, who sang and played guitar, John Cale, who played many instruments, Sterling Morrison on guitar, and Moe Tucker on drums. They were like a super team of musicians!
A Famous Artist Helped Them Out!
A very famous artist named Andy Warhol, who made cool soup can paintings, became their manager in 1966. He even had them play music at his art studio, which was called The Factory. They also traveled around with him in a show that had music, lights, and movies all mixed together. It was called the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, which sounds like a wild party!
Their First Album Was a Surprise Hit... Later!
Their very first album, called The Velvet Underground & Nico, came out in 1967. It had a famous singer named Nico on it too. At first, not many people bought it, and critics didn't say much. But guess what? Now, people think it's one of the best music albums EVER made! It just goes to show that sometimes, really cool things take time to be noticed.
