The Moose's Tooth

The Moose's Tooth is a giant rock mountain in Alaska that looks a little bit like a moose's tooth! It's not super tall compared to some mountains, but it's very tricky to climb. It has huge rocky walls and long icy slides called couloirs.

This mountain wasn't always called The Moose's Tooth! Some explorers first named it Mount Hubbard. But then, people who knew the local Athabascan language translated the mountain's real name, which meant 'Moose's Tooth.' The scientists who name places in the United States liked that name better, so they officially called it The Moose's Tooth.

Climbing The Moose's Tooth is a serious challenge! The top ridge is long and flat, but the sides drop down very steeply. This shape makes it look like a tooth. The easiest way to climb it is actually not from the top ridge, but by going up steep icy paths on the side called couloirs. The most popular route is called the 'Ham and Eggs Route' – sounds yummy, but it's actually a tough climb!

You can find The Moose's Tooth way up in Alaska, in a place called the Central Alaska Range. It's near a big valley of ice called the Ruth Gorge, which is about 15 miles away from Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. Imagine a giant playground made of rock and ice – that's kind of what this area is like for expert climbers!
