Key Facts
A Secret Oil Treasure Chest!
Once upon a time, the United States government had special hidden oil spots, like a secret treasure chest! One of these spots was called Teapot Dome because it looked like a teapot. This oil was super important for the Navy's ships.
But, a man named Albert B. Fall, who was in charge of these special lands, made a secret deal. He let oil companies use the oil without asking anyone else first, and for a really low price!
Who Was Albert B. Fall?
Albert B. Fall was like the boss of all the lands the government owned. He was supposed to protect the secret oil for the Navy. But, he got a little greedy. He took money, like secret gifts, from the oil companies. In return, he let them drill for oil at Teapot Dome and other places. This was not fair at all, and it was a big secret that eventually came out!
Uh Oh, Someone Found Out!
A very smart and honest senator named Thomas J. Walsh started asking questions. He was like a detective looking for the truth! He found out about the secret deals and the money Albert B. Fall was getting. It was a huge scandal, which means a big, embarrassing problem for the government. People were very angry because it wasn't fair and it was dishonest.
Jail Time for a Government Man!
Because of the scandal, Albert B. Fall was found guilty. He was the first person who worked for the President in a high job to ever go to jail! It showed everyone that even powerful people can get in trouble if they do bad things. This scandal helped make new rules so that the government has to be more careful and honest with important things like oil.
