NASA's Hubble Sees Asteroid Spout Six Comet-like Tails

Key Facts
What's That Wiggle at the Back?
A tail is like a special extra limb that sticks out from the back of many animals. It’s usually long and bendy! Think of a dog wagging its tail when it’s happy, or a monkey using its tail to grab onto a tree branch.
Some animals, like frogs, used to have tails when they were babies but lose them as they grow up. Even though we don't have tails, we have a tiny bone called the coccyx where a tail might have been long ago!
How Do Tails Do Their Tricks?
Tails are super useful! For many animals, a tail is like a built-in balancing pole. When a cat walks on a fence, its tail helps it stay steady, just like a tightrope walker uses a long pole.
Some tails can be used like a hand to grab things, like a prehensile tail on a monkey. Others are used for communication, like a dog’s wagging tail showing it’s excited or a cat’s tail swishing when it’s annoyed. Some tails are even used to fan away pesky bugs on a hot day!
Amazing Animal Tail Superpowers!
Did you know some animals have tails that can do amazing things? A scorpion has a tail with a stinger that it can use to protect itself. Some fish use their tails to swim super fast through the water, like a powerful motor.
Even some tiny bugs called springtails have a special tail that helps them jump really high, much higher than you can jump! These tails are all different shapes and sizes, helping each animal do what it needs to survive.
Tails in Our World
While most animals have tails, some creatures have tail-like parts that aren't exactly the same. Snails and slugs have feelers that can look a bit like tails. Even though we humans don't have tails anymore, scientists study them to understand how animals move and balance.
The word 'caudal' is a fancy science word that means 'related to the tail'. So, even though we don't have them, tails are still a big part of the animal kingdom and science!
