Sumerian Language

Long, long ago, in a land called Sumer, people spoke a special language called Sumerian. It's one of the oldest languages we know about, like a super-ancient secret code! Imagine if your great-great-great-great-great-grandparents had a language only they understood. That's kind of like Sumerian! It was spoken by people who built amazing cities and invented cool things.

Nobody knows for sure where the Sumerian language first popped up, which makes it a fun mystery! It started being used thousands of years ago, way before even the pyramids in Egypt were built. Think about it: this language was around when dinosaurs were gone, but before cars or even horses were used for riding! It was the main language in a place called Mesopotamia.

Sumerian is super important because the people who spoke it invented writing! They used a special pointy stick to make wedge-shaped marks on clay tablets. This helped them keep track of everything, like how many sheep they had or what stories they wanted to tell. It's like the very first way people wrote down their thoughts, which is a HUGE deal for us today!

The Sumerians didn't use letters like we do. They used pictures and symbols that looked like little wedges, called cuneiform. Imagine drawing with a triangle on soft mud! They pressed these marks onto wet clay, and when the clay dried, it became a permanent message. It’s like sending a text message, but on a clay tablet that could last for thousands of years!
