The Stolen Generations

Long ago in Australia, some children who were Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander were taken away from their mommies and daddies. This was done by grown-ups in charge of the country and by some churches. It was like they were being stolen from their families and their homes. This happened for many, many years, and it made a lot of people very sad.

The people who took the children thought they were doing the right thing, but they were wrong. They believed that if children had lighter skin, they should be raised differently. So, they took children, especially those with mixed families, away from their parents and communities. It was like a rule that said these children didn't belong with their own families anymore.

It's hard to believe, but in some places, almost one out of every three Indigenous children was taken from their family. That's like if in a classroom of 30 kids, 10 of them were suddenly taken away! These children missed their families, their traditions, and their homes. It was a very difficult and painful time for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Later on, people learned how much this hurt families. They made a big report to understand everything that happened. This report helped everyone know the truth about the Stolen Generations. It's important to learn about this sad part of history so we can make sure it never happens again and treat everyone with kindness.
