Where is Stepney?

Imagine London as a giant playground! Stepney is a special spot in the East End of this playground. It's not a big, official place anymore, but people still know it. It used to be part of a much bigger area, like a giant's kingdom! Think of it as a neighborhood within the big city of London, in a part called the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Stepney's Green Past!

Long, long ago, Stepney was super green! There was a big grassy field called Mile End Green. Now, only a little bit of that green space is left, called Stepney Green. It’s like finding a tiny piece of an old treasure map! This green spot is a reminder of how the area used to look before lots of houses and buildings were built.

Building a New Home

In the olden days, lots of people came to Stepney looking for homes. It grew super fast in the 1800s! Many new houses were built for families who needed a place to live. Sometimes, these areas became very crowded. Stepney also faced tough times, like when buildings were damaged during a big event called the Blitz.

Old Houses and New Ones

Even though Stepney changed a lot, some old buildings are still there! You can find houses that are hundreds of years old, like the ones around Arbour Square. In the 1960s, many old houses were replaced with taller buildings. It’s a mix of old and new, like having a favorite old toy and a brand-new video game!
