Sputnik 1: The First Beep from Space!

Sputnik 1 was like a shiny, silver beach ball, but much smaller, about the size of a basketball! It was made of smooth metal and had four long antennas sticking out. Its most amazing job was to send out a simple 'beep-beep' sound that could be heard all the way from Earth. This little ball was the first artificial satellite ever to zoom around our planet, traveling faster than a race car!

Sputnik 1 was built by scientists in a country called the Soviet Union, which is now Russia. They wanted to see if they could send something into space and have it keep going around the Earth. On October 4, 1957, they launched it on a giant rocket. It was a super exciting moment because no one had ever done this before. It was like the first step on a brand new adventure for humans!
