Skerry

A skerry is like a super small island made of rocks. It's usually so tiny that no people can live there. Think of it as a rocky bump sticking out of the water! Sometimes, a skerry is so small it's just a rocky reef, which is a part of the sea floor that's close to the surface. These little islands can be found in oceans all around the world, looking like lonely little dots in the vast blue sea.

Even though skerries are small and rocky, some plants can still grow there! You might find tough little grasses that can handle the salty wind and waves. Mosses, which are like tiny green carpets, can also cling to the rocks. These plants might not look like much, but they are super important for the animals that visit. They provide a little bit of food and a place to rest.

Skerries are like special rest stops for sea animals! Seals love to haul themselves out of the water and onto the rocks to take a nap or warm up in the sun. Lots of different kinds of birds also use skerries. They might land there to rest their wings during long flights, or they might use them as a safe place to build their nests away from land predators. It's a busy place for wildlife!

Because skerries are so small and often covered by waves during high tide, they aren't good places for people to build homes or towns. They don't have fresh water or much space. But that's okay! Their real job is to be a special home and resting spot for sea creatures. They are a natural part of the ocean's landscape, adding to the amazing variety of places on our planet.
