Sign language

Sign language is like a secret code for your hands and face! Instead of using your voice, you use your fingers, hands, and even your eyebrows to make words and sentences. It's a whole language, just like English or Spanish, but you see it instead of hearing it.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing often use sign language to talk to each other and to hearing people who have learned it too. It’s a way for everyone to share ideas and stories!

Sign languages didn't just appear out of nowhere! They grew over time, just like spoken languages. Many sign languages started in schools for deaf children.

Imagine lots of kids who couldn't hear talking to each other – they started making up signs to understand each other. Over many years, these signs became more organized and turned into real languages. Each country often has its own special sign language, like American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL).

Sign language is like a superpower that connects people! It allows deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to communicate easily and fully. Without it, it would be much harder to share thoughts, feelings, and learn new things.

It helps build strong communities and makes sure everyone can be included in conversations and activities. It’s a way to make sure no one feels left out and everyone can express themselves.

To 'speak' sign language, you use your hands to form different shapes, called signs. Each sign means a word or an idea. But it's not just your hands! Your face is super important too. A smile can mean you're happy, or a frown can show you're sad. Even the way you move your eyebrows can change the meaning of a sentence. It’s like acting out your words with your whole body!
