Sierra Maestra

Imagine a super long line of bumpy hills stretching across the south of Cuba. That's the Sierra Maestra! These mountains rise up really fast from the ocean, like a giant waking up from the sea. They are so big they are split into smaller mountain groups, like Vela and Santa Catalina. It's a wild and beautiful place in Cuba.

The highest point in the Sierra Maestra is a mountain called Pico Turquino. It's super tall, reaching 1,974 meters (6,476 feet) high! That's taller than many, many giraffes stacked on top of each other! This amazing peak is not just the highest in the mountains, but the highest in all of Cuba. Wow!

These mountains are like a treasure chest! Deep inside the rocks, there are lots of important minerals. Think of shiny copper, strong manganese, and useful iron. These are the same kinds of things used to make cars, buildings, and even your toys. The Sierra Maestra has a lot of these valuable rocks hidden away.
