Saparmurat Niyazov
Key Facts
Who Was This Leader?
Saparmurat Niyazov was the leader of a country called Turkmenistan for a very long time, from 1985 until he passed away in 2006. He was like the boss of the whole country! At first, he was part of a big group called the Soviet Union, but then Turkmenistan became its own country.
Niyazov was its first president, and he stayed president for 15 years. He even had a special title, Türkmenbaşy, which means 'Head of the Turkmen'.
His Own Special Rules!
Niyazov really liked to be in charge and made many unusual rules. He wrote a book called the Ruhnama, which was like his autobiography, and he wanted everyone to read it! It was a required book in schools, and even people applying for jobs or learning to drive had to know about it.
He also changed the names of the months and days of the week to be about himself and his book. It was like if your school made you learn about your teacher's favorite cartoon characters every day!
A Leader Who Loved Himself
Niyazov wanted everyone to think he was super important. This is sometimes called a 'cult of personality'. He had his picture and statues all over the country.
He even made himself president for life in 1999, meaning he planned to be the leader forever. He closed down many hospitals and libraries outside the main city, saying sick people could just travel to the capital if they needed help. This made life harder for many people.
What Happened Next?
After Niyazov died, Turkmenistan started to change. Leaders who came after him tried to undo some of his unusual rules. They changed the names of the months and days back to normal. They also reopened libraries and hospitals. It shows that even though one person can have a lot of power, things can change over time. Turkmenistan is still working to build its future.
