What's All the Fuss About Salt?

Salt is super important for us, right? But a long time ago, in India, the British rulers made a rule that only they could sell salt. They even made people pay extra money, like a special tax, to buy it! This made salt very expensive for everyone. Mahatma Gandhi, a very wise leader, thought this was very unfair. He decided to do something about it, and it started with a long walk!

Walking for Freedom!

Gandhi and 78 of his friends started a special walk called the Salt March. They walked for 24 days, covering a distance as long as driving from your house to another city! They started at a peaceful place called Sabarmati Ashram and walked all the way to a town called Dandi by the sea. Along the way, more and more people joined them, like a growing parade of hope!

Making Their Own Salt!

When they finally reached Dandi, Gandhi did something amazing. He walked to the sea and scooped up some seawater. Then, he let the sun dry it up. Poof! He made his own salt! This was a way to show everyone that they didn't need the British to get salt. It was like saying, 'We can do this ourselves!' This simple act made millions of Indians realize they could stand up for themselves too.

A Big Change Begins!

The Salt March was a huge success because it showed everyone that even without fighting, people could make a big difference. It inspired so many people to protest peacefully against unfair rules. This peaceful protest, called civil disobedience, helped India move closer to becoming a free country. It even inspired people in other countries, like the famous Martin Luther King Jr.!
