Rosemary Kennedy

Imagine a big family with lots of famous brothers! Rosemary Kennedy was the oldest daughter in a very important American family. Her dad was Joseph P.

Kennedy Sr., and her mom was Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. She had brothers who became famous, like President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert F. and Ted Kennedy.

Rosemary was born a long, long time ago, in 1918, when cars looked very different and there were no video games!

When Rosemary grew up, she sometimes found things a little tricky. She could get upset easily. Her dad wanted to help her, so when she was 23 years old, he made a big decision. Doctors did a special kind of brain surgery on her. Sadly, this surgery made it hard for her to talk clearly and she needed a lot of help for the rest of her life. It was like her brain's wires got a little mixed up.

After her surgery, Rosemary lived at a special place called St. Coletta in Wisconsin. It was a place where people got extra care and support. For many years, not many people knew where Rosemary was or what had happened to her. It was a big secret! But later in her life, she got to visit her family again and see her brothers and sisters. She lived a very long life, passing away in 2005.

Rosemary's story is a reminder that even in famous families, there can be private struggles. Her family loved her, but they also kept her situation quiet for a long time. This was a different time, and people didn't always understand how to help those with special needs. Rosemary's life, though different from her famous siblings, was still an important part of her family's story.
