Key Facts
Meet the Last Roman Emperor!
Romulus Augustus was a very important person a super long time ago. He was the very last emperor of the Western Roman Empire. Think of it like being the captain of a giant ship that was about to dock for the last time.
He was emperor for less than a year, and he was still just a boy when he ruled! He was probably around 10 to 12 years old. That's like being in 4th or 5th grade and being in charge of everything!
Where Did This Young Ruler Come From?
Romulus Augustus was born in Italy, a country that looks like a boot on a map. His dad was a powerful guy named Orestes, who was like a super-manager for the emperor before him. Orestes made Romulus Augustus the emperor, but he was really the one pulling the strings.
It was a bit like a kid being named the class president, but their parents were really making all the decisions. This happened in the year 475 AD, which is over 1,500 years ago!
Why Was He So Special (Even If He Was Young)?
Even though he was a kid, Romulus Augustus was the symbol of the end of a really, really big and powerful empire. The Roman Empire had been around for hundreds of years, and it was famous for its amazing roads, buildings, and armies. When Romulus Augustus stopped being emperor, it meant that the Western Roman Empire was officially over.
It was a HUGE moment in history, like the end of a really long and exciting movie.
What Happened to the Boy Emperor?
After ruling for a short time, a powerful leader named Odoacer came and took over. Odoacer didn't want a kid emperor, so he sent Romulus Augustus away. He was supposed to be exiled, which means sent to live somewhere else.
But, luckily for Romulus Augustus, he wasn't hurt. He was sent to live in the countryside with a pension, which is like getting a small allowance to live on. He lived out his days quietly, far from the big city.
