River Tay

Imagine a super-long river that's the longest in all of Scotland! That's the River Tay. It starts way up high on a mountain called Ben Lui and then flows all the way across the country.

It even goes through some pretty lakes, like Loch Tay, which is like a giant bathtub for the river! The Tay is so big, it's the largest river in the whole United Kingdom by how much water it carries. That's a LOT of water!

The River Tay has a very exciting journey. It begins in the wild Highlands, which are like Scotland's big, hilly backyard. Then, it travels east, passing through beautiful valleys.

It gets wider and wider until it reaches a city called Perth. In Perth, the river starts to get a bit salty because it's getting close to the sea! Finally, it flows into a big watery area called the Firth of Tay, which is like the river's grand exit to the ocean.

That means more water rushes down the Tay than any other river in places like England, Scotland, and Wales! Its watery home, called a catchment, is huge, covering an area as big as many, many playgrounds put together. It's a super important home for lots of nature.

People have lived near the River Tay for a very, very long time. They built cities and towns along its banks because rivers are like super-highways for getting around and for getting water. One famous street, Tay Street, is named after the river and runs right along its edge. The river has always been a big part of life for the people who call Scotland home.
