Right circular cylinder

A right circular cylinder is a super cool shape that looks like a can of your favorite food or a tall, round building. It has two flat, round bottoms, called bases, that are perfectly on top of each other. The sides are perfectly straight and go straight up and down, like a soldier standing at attention.

If you could slice it perfectly in half, you'd see a rectangle! It’s like a perfectly stacked set of coins.

You can make a cylinder by taking a flat rectangle and spinning it around one of its sides really, really fast! Imagine drawing a rectangle on a piece of paper and then spinning it around one of the long sides. The shape that gets drawn is a cylinder!

The side it spins around becomes the height, and the other side becomes the radius, which is the distance from the middle of the circle to its edge.

You see cylinders all the time! Think about a can of soda, a toilet paper roll, or even a tall water tower. These are all examples of right circular cylinders. They are super useful because they can hold lots of things, like liquids or grains. Their shape makes them strong and easy to stack, which is why we use them for so many things in our everyday lives.

Cylinders are awesome because they are strong and can hold a lot. Imagine a big, round silo on a farm – it's a cylinder shape to hold lots of grain! Or think about a fire hose.

The water inside flows through a cylinder. They are also easy to make and use. Because their sides are straight up and down, they are very stable and don't tip over easily.

They are a fundamental shape in building and packaging.
