Key Facts
What's This 'Retirement' Thing?
Retirement is like hitting the pause button on your job! It’s when grown-ups decide they’ve worked enough and want to stop working. They might do this because they are getting older, or maybe their bodies just need a rest.
Sometimes, they can start retirement when they get special money called a pension, which is like a reward for working a long time. It’s a time to enjoy hobbies, travel, or just relax at home!
A Long, Long Time Ago...
Believe it or not, retirement is a pretty new idea! A super long time ago, people didn't have special retirement plans. Life expectancy was much shorter, meaning people didn't live as long.
So, most people worked until they couldn't work anymore, sometimes even until the very end of their lives. It wasn't until around the late 1800s and early 1900s that countries started thinking about retirement and pensions. Germany was the very first country to offer retirement benefits in 1889!
Why It's a Big Deal!
Retirement is important because it gives people a chance to enjoy their golden years. After spending many years working, maybe from when they were as young as 18, they deserve a break! It's a time to spend with family, learn new things, or do all the fun activities they didn't have time for before.
In many places, having a pension when you retire is seen as a right, like the right to go to school. It's a way to say 'thank you' for all their hard work.
Money for the Break!
So, how do people afford to stop working? Many countries have systems where employers or the government help save money for retirement. This is often called a pension.
Think of it like a piggy bank that gets filled up over many years. In some places, like the United States, these pension plans are becoming less common for workers in regular companies, and more people are saving their own money in special accounts. But for people who work for the government, pensions are still very common!
