Remontancy

Imagine losing a finger and it growing back perfectly! That's kind of like remontancy. It’s a super-power some animals have to regrow parts of their bodies that have been lost or injured. It’s not just about growing back a tiny bit; sometimes they can regrow whole legs, tails, or even parts of their brains! It’s like having a built-in repair kit that’s always ready to go.

Lots of different creatures can do this! Think of a starfish that can regrow an arm, or a lizard that can grow back its tail after a predator grabs it. Even some tiny creatures like planarian flatworms can regrow their entire bodies from just a small piece! Remontancy is super important for survival. If a predator grabs a lizard’s tail, the tail can break off, and the lizard can escape! The tail might even wiggle to distract the predator while the lizard runs away. Then, a new tail grows back.
