Pyramid of the Moon

The Pyramid of the Moon is a super old, giant stone pyramid in Mexico. It's the second biggest one in a place called Teotihuacan, which means 'the place where people became gods.' This pyramid looks a lot like a mountain nearby called Cerro Gordo. It's like the builders wanted to bring a piece of the mountain right into their city!

It's so big, it's hard to imagine how they built it without modern machines.

This pyramid wasn't just a pile of rocks. It was built a very, very long time ago, between 100 and 450 AD. That's way before your grandparents' grandparents were even born! People used the top of the pyramid like a stage for special ceremonies. They honored a very important goddess who was in charge of water, the earth, and making things grow. It was a very sacred place for them.

The Pyramid of the Moon is like a giant puzzle with many layers. It actually covers up older buildings that were there even before the bigger Pyramid of the Sun! Builders kept adding new parts to make it bigger and more grand. They even buried important people and animals inside as part of special rituals. These burials helped make the new layers of the pyramid seem extra special and powerful.

Imagine a long, wide path leading straight to the pyramid. That's the Avenue of the Dead! The Pyramid of the Moon sits at the end of this amazing road.

It's connected by stairs, making it easy to climb up for ceremonies. In front of the pyramid is a big open space called the Plaza of the Moon. It has a special altar in the middle, like a centerpiece for all the important events that happened there.
