Polar Bear: The Arctic's White Wanderer

Polar bears are the biggest bears on land! They have thick white fur that keeps them super warm, even when it's freezing outside. Their fur isn't really white, though – it's clear, and it looks white because of how light bounces off it!

They have black skin underneath to soak up the sun's warmth. Polar bears have huge paws with rough pads and claws that help them walk on slippery ice and catch their dinner.

These awesome bears live way up north in the Arctic. That's a super cold place with lots of ice and snow. They spend most of their time on sea ice, which is like a floating platform made of frozen ocean water. They use this ice to hunt for seals, their favorite food. When the ice melts in the summer, they might have to swim long distances to find more ice or rest on land.

Polar bears have special paws that are perfect for their icy home. They are really big, like snowshoes, so the bears don't sink into the snow. They also have little bumps on their paws to help them grip the ice. Polar bears are excellent swimmers too! They can swim for many miles using their front paws like paddles. They are patient hunters, often waiting by seal holes in the ice for hours!

Polar bears are very important because they are at the top of the food chain in the Arctic. They help keep the balance of nature. But their icy homes are melting because of climate change. This makes it harder for them to find food and survive. Protecting their habitat is super important so these magnificent white bears can keep wandering the Arctic for a long, long time.
