Key Facts
Meet King Philip, the Longest Ruler!
Philip V was born a prince in France a super long time ago, in 1683. He wasn't supposed to be king of Spain, but a special wish made him the boss! He became king in 1700 and ruled for so long that he's the longest-reigning king Spain ever had. That's like staying in the same grade at school for almost 50 years! He even took a break from being king for a little while but then came back.
A Crown and a Big War!
When Philip became king of Spain, other countries got upset. They thought it wasn't fair! This started a big fight called the War of the Spanish Succession. It was like a giant playground argument that lasted for 13 years! Even though there was a war, Philip still made important changes in Spain to make the king's power stronger. He was like a captain making new rules for the team.
Making Spain Stronger
Philip V wanted Spain to be super organized. He made new rules called the Nueva Planta decrees. These rules helped the king have more control over all the different parts of Spain. It was like making sure everyone on a big team knew exactly what their job was. He also changed how the Spanish Empire was run, both in faraway lands and right in Spain. He was a busy king!
A King's Family Life
Philip V had two wives and many children. His second wife, Elisabeth Farnese, was very smart and helped him rule, especially when he felt sad sometimes. When Philip V finally stopped being king for good and passed away in 1746, his son Ferdinand VI became the new king. Being king is a big job, and Philip V certainly did it for a very, very long time!
