Persephone
Key Facts
Who is Persephone?
Persephone is a very special character from ancient Greek stories. She is the daughter of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Demeter, the goddess of growing things. Sometimes she's called Kore, which means 'maiden.' Persephone has a super important job: she helps bring spring to the world!
She is like the spirit of flowers and yummy grains that grow in the fields. But her story also takes her to a very different place, deep underground.
A Surprise Trip to the Underworld!
One day, while Persephone was playing in a meadow filled with flowers, the ground suddenly opened up! A chariot pulled by black horses rushed out, and Hades, the king of the underworld, took her away to his dark kingdom. Demeter was so sad and worried that she stopped the plants from growing, making the world cold and bare.
This made everyone very unhappy, so Zeus made a deal to bring Persephone back.
The Pomegranate Secret
When Persephone was in the underworld, Hades gave her some yummy pomegranate seeds to eat. But eating food in the underworld meant she had to stay there for part of the year! Because she ate a few seeds, she had to spend some time with Hades each year.
This is why, when she goes to the underworld, the world above gets cold and plants don't grow. But when she returns, spring comes back with beautiful flowers and green leaves!
Persephone's Big Job
Persephone's story helps explain the seasons. When she is on Earth with her mother, Demeter, plants grow and it's warm. When she has to go to the underworld to be with Hades, her mother Demeter misses her so much that she makes the plants go to sleep, and it becomes winter.
Persephone is like the queen of both the beautiful spring flowers and the mysterious underground world. She is a very powerful goddess!
